Pandemic, Plein Aire, Poignant!

The idea of Local Landscapes grew out of outdoor painting excursions that Stephen and Kim did as a welcome release to the isolation of the pandemic. Stephen and Kim provide two perspectives of the Evansville area. Stephen has the practical perspective of a long term resident and Kim offers the outsider view from his frequent trips from his home in Fergus Falls.

“We spent many days sketching in the open fields and driving the many roads around Evansville to contrast both historical and present realities.” commented Kim.

Stephen Henning of Evansville, Minnesota, is known as an award winning artist who has original works hanging in all 50 states as well as internationally.  He has had an extensive career as an art director, graphic designer and a creative director for a number of agencies and corporations based in the Twin Cities.  After a significant injury occurred  to Stephen’s painting hand in 2010, he has only been painting part-time.  His creative focus has been on working with digital media.

Over the past two decades, Stephen has been artist-in-residence at many area schools and has taught workshops for art clubs and organizations from Minnesota to Illinois.  He has also served on the board of directors for COMPAS, Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts, Evansville Arts Coalition and Art of the Lakes Association.  Learn more about Stephen Henning and his work HERE.

Kim Embretson

Kim Embretson enjoys plein aire painting.

When Kim Embretson of Fergus Falls, Minnesota retired in 2016, he took the opportunity to follow new creative passions.  He enrolled in art classes at M State in Fergus Falls and has studied under John Charles Cox.  Kim says he has also benefited from many student and local artist conversations.  His work has been shown at Kaddatz Galleries in Fergus Falls and he currently has an exhibit at the Waage Theatre at M State running through December 17.

Classes were cancelled in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic and Kim reached out to Henning for some virtual critique sessions as he continued to paint. It was eventually suggested that they get off of their computers and do some sketching in the field.  They worked outdoors and at a safe social distance from each other exploring a variety of locations in and around Evansville, Minnesota. Learn more about Kim Embretson and his work HERE.

Please join us at the Evansville Art Center to experience Local Landscapes, two artists’ perspectives in paint of this beautiful and historic area.
